Bio & Quotes

What started with the idea of mixing Post-Rock with Folk music, is where Benjamin Finney’s sound lives—taking inspiration from artists: Nick Drake, Sufjan Stevens, and Sigur Rós, Benjamin writes Folk instrumentals that “Achieve technical, Virtuosity while retaining melodic integrity”.

Benjamin's interest in music began at fifteen when he was immersed in folk nights and surrounded by a broad variety of instruments. Over time, this influence has woven its way into Benjamin's style—emotively crafted folk soundscapes surrounded by textured acoustic instruments.

After fifteen years in Manchester, Benjamin relocated to rural Scotland, releasing Home to mark the occasion.

“One person in a room picking and accenting as the mood strikes.”

— J Spicer (Tiny Mix Tapes)

“Acoustic guitar, echoing fragments like waves rolling over each other.

His latest Album. The Storm was written over the first months surrounded by Scottish landscapes. The twelve tracks featured explore the themes of change, nature, and belonging, with the addition of Benjamin's take on a couple of traditional folk pieces.

— Marc Weidenbaum (Disquiet)

— JSKY (BBC Introducing)

— Andy Backhouse (BBC Introducing)

In 2014, Benjamin Finney was selected as one of fourteen unsigned musicians to take part in Chaos to Order, a week-long residency at Manchester Central Library hosted by Everything Everything. Inspired by this experience, he returned to his roots, focusing on acoustic guitar instrumentals with the idea of combining Folk and Post-Rock music. This idea led to further opportunities, including a commission from Brighter Sound to compose a 20-minute piece of music titled Change or Be Changed for BBC Music Day in Manchester. That same year, his debut release ‘Warmth Within These Walls’ was featured on Fresh on the Net’s Fresh Faves.

In 2017, Benjamin shifted his focus to the mandolin, joining Americana artist Izzie Walsh on extensive UK and international tours, with performances across Canada and Australia. Along the way, they shared lineups with artists such as Curse of Lono, and Chip Greene (USA), and appeared on Bob Harris’ Under the Apple Tree Sessions. Along these travels, he created connections with fellow musicians and future collaborations.

After leaving the band in 2020, Benjamin committed fully to his solo career, his distinctive brand of Indie Folk and original inspiration for his music. His debut single ‘Run For Cover’ marked a change for him, openly talking about themes of anxiety, depression, and sexual identity. The honest and open storytelling behind Benjamin's songs would become more featured in Benjamin's live shows. Of which he most recently supported: Route 500, Noah Yorke, and Coruja Jones. As well as becoming a regular on the Manchester music scene.

Benjamin’s music has found a global audience online, with regular playlist placements by Alex Rainbird Music. Songs like ‘Mountain Song’, ‘Clear’, and ‘Murmuration’ have helped expand his audience, with his emotive instrumentals resonating deeply with listeners around the world.

After fifteen years in Manchester, Benjamin relocated to rural Scotland, releasing ‘Home’ to mark the occasion. His latest Album. ‘The Storm’ was written over the first months surrounded by Scottish landscapes. The twelve tracks featured explore the themes of change, nature, and belonging, with the addition of Benjamin's take on a couple of traditional folk pieces.
